The client’s home in Toronto had an unfinished basement with low headroom and the client wanted to increase the ceiling height to create a livable space. After an initial consultation and assessment of the foundation, we determined that underpinning was the best solution.

Step 1: Excavation – We started the project by excavating around the foundation walls to expose the existing footings. This allowed us to inspect the foundation for any signs of damage or cracks that needed to be addressed.

Step 2: Installation of Temporary Supports – Once the foundation was exposed, we installed temporary supports to ensure the stability of the structure during the underpinning process.

Step 3: Underpinning – Using a combination of manual digging and hydraulic jacks, we gradually lowered the foundation to create additional headroom in the basement. We installed new concrete footings beneath the existing ones, ensuring that they were deep enough to support the additional load.

Step 4: Waterproofing – After completing the underpinning process, we waterproofed the foundation walls using a waterproofing membrane. This ensured that the new living space would remain dry and protected from water damage.

Step 5: Pouring of Concrete Slab – Finally, we poured a new concrete slab in the basement, ensuring that it was level and smooth. We also added a layer of insulation to improve energy efficiency.

The IcyReno team completed this basement underpinning project successfully, and the client was extremely satisfied with the new living space.
